Global demand for steel continues to rise despite rising prices. This provides an impetus to already established steel manufacturers to expand their capacities further. Nippon Steel Corporation is the second largest steel producer in the world. It was formed in 1970 by an amalgamation of Yawata Iron & Steel and Fuji Iron & Steel. It has extensive steel making plants located in Hokkaido, Iwate, chiba, Tokyo, Osaka, Yamaguchi, Oita, Fukuoka and Aicha provinces in Japan.
Nippon Steel is one of those few industrial giants to have a real concern for the environment. The company invested in a plastic waste recycling unit to turn it into coke to be used in steel production. Development of high tensile steel in collaboration with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries led to reduction in thickness of the hulls of modern ships, again saving in materials and total energy. In 2006, Nippon Steel set up a pilot process to produce ethanol from food waste.
In February 2011 they announced a merger with Sumitomo Metal by next year. This will increase their rankings and production. The history of Nippon Steel goes all the way back to 1857 when it started production of steel using western style furnace. In 1901 Yawata Steel Works commenced production of steel. In 1934 Yawata was merged with Wanishi Iron Works, Kamaishi Mines, Mitsubishi Iron, Fuji Steel, Kyusyu Steel and Tokyo Steel to form Japan Iron & Steel Co Ltd. In 1950 Japan Iron & Steel was dissolved and Yawata Iron & Steel Co and Fuji Iron & Steel Co were born of the dissolution. In 1970 these two were merged to form Nippon Steel Corporation. In 2003, Nippon Steel and the stainless steel division of Sumitomo Metal Industries were amalgamated into Nippon Steel & Sumikin Stainless Steel Corporation.
